Our Department.

We are committed to becoming a Center of Excellence for education, research, and practice of maritime continent-based communication studies in the Information Age. Our ultimate goal is to build a quality academic community to engage intellectually in society.

History.

The Department of Communication Science has its beginnings in Makassar in the 1960s. At the time, the private college Pers dan Publisiteit (Press and Publicity) was established to produce high-educated journalist cadres. The school primarily recruited prominent figures in the press and intellectuals in Makassar as its teaching staff, including notable figures like A. Muis, Drs. Fauzi Etek, and G. R. Pantouw. Notable alumni of Pers and Publisiteit include A. S. Achmad, Abdullah Suara, Jamaluddin Eppe, and Baharuddin Dg. Massikki.

On January 30, 1961, by decree of the Minister of Education and Culture, the College of Pers and Publisiteit was merged with Tatapraja College. The new institution opened two new departments: the Department of Public Administration and the Department of Publicity (which was later renamed the Department of Communication Science). Both departments later played critical roles in the establishment of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at Universitas Hasanuddin.

When General M. Yusuf decided to pursue a career in journalism, he requested and obtained permission from the Central Government of the Republic of Indonesia to open the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences in Makassar. Thus, Pers and Publisiteit was assimilated into the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at Universitas Hasanuddin, and the former private college's students became students of the new faculty's Publicity program under the leadership of former Minister of Information, G. R. Pantouw.
